Under the guidance of the Environmental Protection Department of the Executive Yuan and recommended by the Hualien County Environmental Protection Bureau, Huatung Operation Branch of Taiwan Sugar Corporation won the “Bronze Environmental Hotel” certification for the service industry. The Huatung Operation Branch of TSC, transformed into a tourist sugar factory since the shutdown in 2002, has actively managed the tourism characteristics of the park and provides a rich experience of living, eating, traveling, and playing for tourists. As a result, it became a tourist attraction in Hualien Central District and revitalized the region's prosperity. The certification of an environmentally friendly hotel adds a third environmentally friendly hotel to Hualien County, which in turn has taken a step towards becoming a low-carbon city and an international city.

There are a total of 32 old wooden structures in the Hualien Guangfu Sugar Factory, which are the most complete area for preserving Japanese-style wooden houses in Taiwan. After the TSC Hualien Hotel reopened in 2011, it transformed from a Japanese-style dormitory to a wooden hotel, unlike a traditional cement-built hotel. The wooden house has the functions of adjusting temperature, sound insulation, environmental protection, and health, which is a pioneer of green building. In addition, the factory park retains a large amount of vegetation and ecological environment. The green accommodation project launched at the end of last year replaced the disposable bathroom supplies with refillable cleaning supplies and decided to replace towels and quilts according to the needs of renewal guests to reduce the cleaning of such supplies. Decreasing the consumption of water and electricity has been recognized by the “Environmental Protection and Intelligent Star” of Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

The woodpecker restaurant co-operated in the sugar factory is presented with western cuisine combined with exquisite packages of aboriginal ingredients. In particular, the restaurant is hosted by the Hualien local charity group "Woodpecker Casa", which uses local small-scale farmers' ingredients to reduce raw materials and transportation costs, to achieve the goal of reducing the carbon footprint. The operating income was also returned to the disadvantaged indigenous peoples, which also brought meaningful public welfare feedback to the travelers' journey.

The Environmental Protection Agency expressed that with the rapid development of the tourism and leisure industry, the impact on the environment and the resources consumed have also increased.
